Frequently Asked Questions – Radon

Radon is an odorless, colorless gas produced by Uranium decay in the rocks and soil.

Yes. Radon is a radioactive gas that decays into a serious of solid particles in the air, like a fine mist aerosol that can easily be inhaled into your lungs. Once in your lungs, it breaks down into solid radioactive particles called radon progeny which attaches to dust and other particles. You breathe I the radon which is an Alpha radiation-meaning that it is the heaviest of the radiations. Once deposited into your lungs it attaches to lung tissue and can alter the DNA structure, thus causing cancer.

The gasses radiate up through the rock and the soil, and further radiates through your foundation, accumulating concentrations in your home.

Because you can’t see, smell, or taste radon, it is difficult to detect radon in your home without a test. To find out actual level readings you must get your home tested for radon.

Testing

There are several ways you can test your home. 1) go to your local hardware store and buy a radon test kit. Or you can go to http://sosradon.org/test-kitsand order a test online. 2) Call Premier Radon Solutions at (970) 309-6946, we can bring a test kit to your house, install it for you and come back to test it 3-7 days later.

The EPA recommends to retest approximately every two years.

Holes will be drilled in your basement/foundation. Plastic will be laid so that no gasses can escape into the house, if your house has a crawl space. PVC pipe will be placed in the holes drilled into the foundation and run though the attic or out around the exterior of the house directing the gases above your roof line. The pipe is attached to a fan which is installed to vent the gasses thought the ceiling and vent the radioactive gasses to a safe level above your home. Completion is determined by size of your home.

The price is determined by the square foot of your house. The more supplies needed to complete the job, the more cost is incurred. However, with the average house in this area costs approx. range between $1500 to $2500. Premier Radon Solutions does FREE on site estimates with same day quotes.

If your levels are 4 Ci/L or more, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) advises that you have your home mitigated to prevent further damage. Premier Radon Solutions can take care of everything else for you, give us a call!

The tests involves a passive device such as an active charcoal test kit. It is placed inside your home slightly above eye level (6ft) for about 3-7 days. The radon particles are heavy allowing the test to capture the weight. It is measured by the units of radioactivity in the air per Liter (pCi/L). The tests are accurate if you follow the directions very carefully. Of course, if you have any questions, Premier Radon Solutions will be happy to assist you in any way possible.

Ut convallis, lacus nec ornare volutpat, velit turpis scelerisque purus, quis mollis velit purus ac massa. Fusce quis urna metus. Donec et lacus et sem lacinia cursus.

Most likely there will be exterior piping, unless new construction. However all piping is color matched to the exterior of your house so it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb. It is assembled in such a way that it is appealing to the exterior. Ask about other upgrades, for example copper piping!

Radon Facts

  • Connector.Connector.

Lower levels of radon exposure over a longer period of time is more harmful than short periods of high level exposure.

  • Connector.Connector.

Radon concentrations are up to 10 times higher in the winter.

  • Connector.Connector.

Children are more sensitive to radon because their lungs are smaller and their respiratory rates are twice as high. Doctors say that by age 10, a child receives twice the lung dose of an adult who has been exposed to radon for the same length of time.

  • Connector.Connector.

Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer of non-smokers.
